Joining the club
There are two answers, depending on which half of the room you are heading for. One of them takes no time at all.
What it costs
Casual & family chess
Free
Always, every week. No membership, no rating, no entry fee, nothing to register for. Turn up any time after 6:00 PM.
Superior Grand Prix Quads
$5 per player, per week
Paid on the night you play. No season fee and no commitment — play one Thursday or all 11.
If you just want to play
Nothing to do. Come to The Stable Bar & Grill on a Thursday evening, any time after 6:00 PM, and we will find you a game. Bring a friend, a child, or nobody.
Join the club on Chess67
Chess67 is where the club keeps its calendar, its member list and its tournament entries. Joining puts club nights in front of you and is how you enter anything rated. It is worth doing whichever half of the room you are in.
If you want to play rated
-
Get a US Chess membership
Rated games are submitted to the US Chess Federation, and only current members can play in them. Memberships are bought directly from US Chess and cover you at any USCF event in the country, not just ours. Join US Chess (opens uschess.org)
-
Register for the season on Chess67
Enter the SCC 2026 Fall Grand Prix and you are in the league. You can join in any week — there is no registration window and no fixed roster.
-
Turn up by 7:00 PM
Quads are seeded on the night from current ratings, so arrive in time to be placed. Pay your $5 and you are playing.
Equipment
For rated play, bring a chess set and a clock if you own them. The club has a limited number of each while it gets established, so arriving with your own genuinely helps — but nobody is turned away for not having one.
For casual play, bring nothing. Sets are provided, and if you happen to own one, an extra board on the table is always welcome.
What to expect on a first visit
A long room with tables pushed together, a few dozen people, and food and drink a few steps away. Say hello to whoever looks like they are organising — that is usually Chuck — and you will be playing within a few minutes. Casual play carries on all evening; Superior Grand Prix rounds run at 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM, 9:00 PM and usually finish around ten.
